Leap of faith

Watch on YouTube/read the Bible story online

Just before this passage from Genesis, Ishmael is born to Abram and Hagar (Sarai’s enslaved woman). Abram was 86. Now he is 99, so Ishmael is 13, the age when children became thought of as adults. Abram’s promise had been to be ancestor of a great nation, so perhaps we assume that this is through Ishmael, especially now Ishmael is grown up. But no: the surprise here is that the son in question will be Sarai’s as well as Abram’s. The promise expands to being an ancestor of many nations (so Ishmael still has his own promise).

Names in stories were often used to say what the person was like. So a change of name reflected something else changing. Although in reality Abram/Abraham and Sarai/Sarah were probably just different versions of the same names, the change matters in the story. Abraham is to be ‘ancestor of many nations’; Sarah is to be a ‘princess’.

In the letter to the Romans, Paul remembers Abraham’s faith in God and God’s promise. Even though Abraham and Sarah were both very old, Abraham trusted that God’s promise would be fulfilled. In the same way, our trust in God will bear fruit.

Icebreaker/quickbuild  Make an object – we will tell you what you have to create and give you five minutes to work on it!
Story/home Make your way into church. We will read the first prayer and listen to the story.

Refreshments are served!
/faith You have 20 minutes or so to build something in response to the story, either on your own, or team up with others. Ideas:

● Build a fun waterslide with a scary drop
● Make a scary-looking hole or cave that leads to something amazing
● Hide something amazing behind something unusual, like a waterfall or lava
● Can you make an invisible bridge, or something else that would be scary to cross?
If you don’t fancy building you can go back to the home village (/home) and read the story again in the church, or read some of the other stories in the library, or you might want to just explore the world, or work on your house.
WonderWhile you are creating, think about these questions with the adults on your table.
I Wonder:
● which part of this story you like the best?
● what part is the most important?
● where you are in this story or what part of the story is about you?
● if there is any part of this story we can leave out and still have all the story we need?
There are many other things that can make us WONDER – what are you thinking about?
Final Prayer/home Back to the church for our final prayer
Dance/home We’ll put some music on and let your Minecraft characters dance about using jumping or emotes!
