Read online: Acts 8: 26-40

Philip was one of the seven people appointed (in Acts 6) to do practical work so others could concentrate on preaching and prayer. It didn’t go to plan: the very next stories are about the effective preaching of two of the seven, Stephen (chapter 7) and Philip (chapter 8). Philip was open to sudden changes of plan if that was what was needed: he was north of Jerusalem in Samaria but suddenly is sent south to the road from Jerusalem to Gaza; later he returns north, to Azotus (modern Ashdod, about 20 miles north of Gaza City on the coast). Ethiopia was bigger than the modern country with that name, probably including what is now Sudan. It felt like the end of the world, and people from Ethiopia were probably looked down on. The official was interested in the faith but was an outcast: he would not have been able to join, or to go into the main parts of the temple. So, although he was rich enough to have a scroll of Isaiah, he was probably feeling humiliated as he journeyed home, like the person he was reading about. But there is nothing to stop him being baptised.

Icebreaker/quickbuild  Make an object – we will tell you what you have to create and give you five minutes to work on it!
Story/home Make your way into church. We will read the first prayer and listen to the story.

Refreshments are served!
/Ethiopia You have 20 minutes or so to build something in response to the story, either on your own, or team up with others. Ideas:

● Philip and the Ethiopian were from different backgrounds and cultures. Create two different areas/biomes
● Create the carriage, or a modern version of someone important in a carriage – maybe a Tesla!
● All people everywhere are loved by God and are called to love each other too. Create many different-looking people doing something together, e.g. farming
● The Ethiopian asks to be baptised. Create the scene at the lake. Remember how joyful he is!
If you don’t fancy building you can go back to the home village (/home) and read the story again in the church, or read some of the other stories in the library, or you might want to just explore the world, or work on your house.
WonderWhile you are creating, think about these questions with the adults on your table.
I Wonder:
● which part of this story you like the best?
● what part is the most important?
● where you are in this story or what part of the story is about you?
● if there is any part of this story we can leave out and still have all the story we need?
There are many other things that can make us WONDER – what are you thinking about?
