God Calls Isaiah to Be a Prophet

Watch on YouTube/read the Bible story online

Read online: Isaiah 6: 1-8

A great song to go with our story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zr9SMm1glI

Context

Isaiah was from the southern kingdom, Judah. King Uzziah died in about 742BCE. In those days the Assyrians were strong, based in parts of what are now Iraq and Turkey. About twenty years later, Assyria destroyed the northern kingdom, Israel. Isaiah wanted Judah to rely on God rather than other nations. He also spoke out against people who had become rich landowners and were making life much worse for poor people.

In the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, the word LORD (often written in capitals) is used in place of God’s name, YHWH, which was thought to be too holy to say out loud.

People thought of the temple as linking heaven (where God lives) and earth (where people live). Smoke is a symbol of God’s presence, like the smoke on the mountain where Moses received the law.

Seraphs are mythological beings. “Seraph” is translated elsewhere as “fiery/poisonous serpent”. The wings covering their eyes were probably to keep them from looking at God: Isaiah shared the tradition that if you saw God you would die. Covering their feet is probably about not appearing naked (the word “feet” was sometimes used in place of other body parts people didn’t want to talk about!).

Plan

Icebreaker/quickbuild  Make an object – we will tell you what you have to create and give you five minutes to work on it!
Story/home Make your way into church. We will read the first prayer and listen to the story.
Create

Refreshments are served!
/vision You have 20 minutes or so to build something in response to the story, either on your own, or team up with others. Ideas:

● Build something from the story – a flaming creature with six wings; a high temple full of smoke, the altar with the fire and tongs, Isaiah, scared but volunteering to be sent
● Last week was Pentecost, when we remember the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit (flame, wind) and being sent out. Can you show wind in Minecraft?
● We aren’t all sent to do the same things, because we all have different talents. What are your talents? Maybe team up with someone else and use your Minecraft talents together to create something really amazing!

If you don’t fancy building you can go back to the home village (/home) and read the story again in the church, or read some of the other stories in the library, or you might want to just explore the world, or work on your house.
WonderWhile you are creating, think about these questions with the adults on your table.

I Wonder:
● which part of this story you like the best?
● what part is the most important?
● where you are in this story or what part of the story is about you?
● if there is any part of this story we can leave out and still have all the story we need?

There are many other things that can make us WONDER – what are you thinking about?
Final Prayer/home Back to the church for our final prayer
Dance/home We’ll put some music on and let your Minecraft characters dance about using jumping or emotes!
