Luke 16: 19-31

Context

The rich man wore very expensive clothes and had lots of feasts instead of just on special occasions. Feasts were supposed to be for everyone, rich and poor together, but we don’t hear about anyone else at these parties. And he ignores Lazarus.

Dogs licking wounds might sound unpleasant, but maybe they were being friendly: just like today, some people had dogs as pets. And people thought spit would heal the wound.

The story is probably mostly about how we live, though there were various ideas about what happened after death. Hades was the world of the dead. Abraham was the man who started what became the Jewish people. The rich man is still treating Lazarus as worth less: he thinks Lazarus is a servant to be sent to do jobs.

People thought Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, which in the Jewish faith are called the “Law” or the “Teaching”. The Law and the prophets both say that we should care for people who don’t have enough (the prophets reminded people what God wanted). And the earth belongs to God: we are to look after it rather than keep more and more of it for ourselves.

Plan

Icebreaker/quickbuild  Make an object – we will tell you what you have to create and give you five minutes to work on it!
Story/home Make your way into church. We will read the first prayer (laminated sheets) and listen to the story.
Create

Refreshments are served!
/lazarus You have 20 minutes or so to build something in response to the story, either on your own, or team up with others.  Some ideas:
·         Make Hades – a place of heat and suffering (maybe some lava?)
·         Make Heaven for Abraham and Lazarus – the opposite of Hades (water, flowers, sunshine, peace…)
·         How could Heaven and Hades be separated? Build a barrier
·         Build the rich man’s palace and design his clothes

If you don’t fancy building you can go back to the home village (/home) and read the story again in the church, or read some of the other stories in the library, or you might want to just explore the world, or work on your house.
WonderWhile you are creating, think about these questions with the adults on your table.

I Wonder:
·         which part of this story you like the best?
·         what part is the most important?
·         where you are in this story or what part of the story is about you?
·         if there is any part of this story we can leave out and still have all the story we need?

There are many other things that can make us WONDER – what are you thinking about?
Final Prayer/home Back to the church for our final prayer (laminated sheet)
Dance/home We’ll put some music on and let your Minecraft characters dance about using jumping or emotes!
