Context
Advent is a season in Western Christian traditions which leads up to celebrating Jesus’s coming at Christmas. “Advent” literally means “coming”.
Advent calendars typically count from 1st December but, in the most common way of marking Advent in church, it actually starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas (“Advent Sunday”), which many churches mark as the beginning of the church year. Advent Sunday can be any time from 27th November to 3rd December, depending on which day of the week Christmas Day falls.
Churches often mark the season by lighting candles, a coloured one for each Sunday of Advent and then a white central one on Christmas Day. Some churches have four red candles, while others have three purple and one pink (with the pink one for the third Sunday). In recent decades a variety of themes have been suggested for each Sunday (such as: God’s people, then the prophets, then John the Baptist, then Mary). However, an old Advent tradition is to use the season, as part of our preparation for the second “coming”, to face up to the “four end things”: death, judgement, heaven and hell. Mixed in with those strange ideas are themes of waiting and hope.

| Create Refreshments are served! | You have 30 minutes or so to create a scene from the Christmas story. We’ll watch a video of the story while you work. We’ll then take a screenshot of your build and turn it into a Christmas Card. Have a look at some scenes from traditional Christmas cards. Can you make Minecraft versions? Jesus came to show us that we are loved by God and are called to love others. Sending a card is a good way to show someone they are loved. Who will you send yours to? |
