Mark 11: 1-11 and Mark 14: 1-15: 47

Jesus approaches Jerusalem on a donkey; Pilate would have come with horses. A woman anoints Jesus with so much perfume that it was worth about a year’s wages. Putting oil on guests’ heads was normal but this is excessive! Jesus and the disciples eat together: looking at the other gospels, it’s not clear whether it actually was the Passover meal. The bread and wine is the beginning of our tradition of sharing bread and wine in church. “Gethsemane” means ‘oil press’: it was probably an olive orchard. Judas’s kiss would have been a normal way for a disciple to greet their teacher. People have wondered whether the naked young man who escapes might be the gospel writer himself, but no one knows. Crucifixion was a painful and shameful Roman punishment for rebels. Pilate was ruthless and there is no evidence beyond the Bible that he would release someone in this way. “Barabbas” means “Son of the Father”. A cohort of soldiers would have been several hundred men. Wine mixed with myrrh was a painkiller. “My God, my God…” is the beginning of Psalm 22. Casting lots for clothes also appears in that psalm. The curtain of the temple separated off the holiest place, where God was thought to live

Icebreaker/quickbuild  Make an object – we will tell you what you have to create and give you five minutes to work on it!
Story/home Make your way into church. We will read the first prayer and listen to the story.

Refreshments are served!
/easter You have 20 minutes or so to build something in response to the story, either on your own, or team up with others. Ideas – stations of the cross:

● Create the scene of the triumphal entry to Jerusalem – lots of bright colours, crowds, animals, a donkey
● The garden of Gethsemane where Jesus feels despair. Can you make a garden that feels sad?
● The hill known as the “skull” where Jesus is crucified
● An easter garden, with the empty tomb. Can you make a joyful garden?
● A joyful game – hide some eggs for others to find
If you don’t fancy building you can go back to the home village (/home) and read the story again in the church, or read some of the other stories in the library, or you might want to just explore the world, or work on your house.
WonderWhile you are creating, think about these questions with the adults on your table.
I Wonder:
● which part of this story you like the best?
● what part is the most important?
● where you are in this story or what part of the story is about you?
● if there is any part of this story we can leave out and still have all the story we need?
There are many other things that can make us WONDER – what are you thinking about?
Final Prayer/home Back to the church for our final prayer
