Genesis 45: 3-11,15

Context

Joseph was one of twelve brothers. His brothers resented him because he was his father’s favourite and he spoke about dreaming that he would have power over them. The brothers sell him as a slave then pretend to their father that a wild animal has killed Joseph. Joseph ends up in Egypt with a good job. However, he is sent to prison after a false accusation. His ability to interpret dreams eventually gets him out of prison when he is the only person able to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams about plenty and famine. He becomes second in charge to Pharaoh. There is famine at home and ten of the brothers come to Egypt to buy food. They don’t recognise Joseph (he uses an interpreter to speak with them). Joseph gives them food but insists they return with the youngest brother (Benjamin) next time. Joseph sets up Benjamin to make it look as if he had stolen a silver cup. One of the brothers pleads for Benjamin to be released — and then Joseph weeps and reveals who he is. Joseph arranges for them to settle in Goshen, a fertile area near the Nile delta, where nomads were often allowed to stay.

  • Work together or on your own.

  • Should you take supplies back to the desert?
  • Or should you stay at the farm and help with the harvest.
