Context

Jesus is getting more popular and some of the disciples have just had a glimpse of who he really was. Now, Jesus tries to explain to them that he will suffer and die before rising again; but it’s so strange for them to take in that they don’t understand.

Jesus often calls himself “Son of Man”. It could just mean something like “myself” but is also used in a story in Daniel about someone presented to God who receives great power.

The group of disciples called “the twelve” were men; there were women following Jesus too, and this story shows there were also children around, at least in Capernaum. Jesus spent a lot of time in Capernaum, on the shore of Galilee. Maybe the house was some kind of base.

Jesus saw children as important. He is gentle with the child while showing the disciples how childish (rather than childlike) they’ve been. Children had no power. Maybe being like servants means “don’t go looking for power and authority”; or maybe “find where there is no power or authority and be the church there”. Instead of worrying about how powerful they are, disciples should be welcoming people who have no power.

Plan

Icebreaker	/quickbuild Make an object – we will tell you what you have to create and give you five minutes to work on it!
Story	/home Make your way into church. We will read the first prayer and listen to the story.
Create Refreshments are served!	/greatest You have 20 minutes or so to build something in response to the story, either on your own, or team up with others. Ideas: ● Before you start to build, imagine there is a prize for the best build this week. How does this make you feel about your skills, and the other people in the group? Are they positive or negative emotions? ● Build something you love, in the materials you like the best, something that you’ll feel proud of. How does this make you feel? ● Is there someone in the group not as skilled as you? Can you offer to help? If you aren’t skilled yourself, do you dare ask for help? ● Find a grown up who can’t play Minecraft. Show them some of the basic controls. If you don’t fancy building you can go back to the home village (/home) and read the story again in the church, or read some of the other stories in the library, or you might want to just explore the world, or work on your house.
Wonder	While you are creating, think about these questions with the adults on your table. I Wonder: ● which part of this story you like the best? ● what part is the most important? ● where you are in this story or what part of the story is about you? ● if there is any part of this story we can leave out and still have all the story we need? There are many other things that can make us WONDER – what are you thinking about?
Final Prayer	/home Back to the church for our final prayer
Dance	/home We’ll put some music on and let your Minecraft characters dance about using jumping or emotes!
Games	Free play while the adults tidy up!!
