Genesis 1-2

As with many stories early in the Old Testament, it looks as if there are two main strands of story in Genesis 1–2. The variety is a hint that this is not a scientific textbook! There are two stories about creation here: the first one goes through day by day: light and darkness; sky and earth; sea and land with plants; sun, moon and stars; sea creatures and birds; and finally land animals and humans. Then God rests on the seventh day — reflected in the Jewish tradition of Sabbath. God creates humans both male and female: some of the words here are plural for both God and humans, and the word “adam” is related to “adamah”, meaning ‘earth’. The second story has God creating a human (“adam”) before the plants and animals. It’s only once there are two people in the story that we get actual words for ‘man’ and ‘woman’ — and the description of the woman as “helper” and “partner” uses words which are very unclear, so we can’t be sure of those translations. The humans live in a paradise garden with four great rivers, and they live at peace with each other and with the animals.

Icebreaker/quickbuild  Make an object – we will tell you what you have to create and give you five minutes to work on it!
Story/home Make your way into church. We will read the first prayer (laminated sheets) and listen to the story.

Refreshments are served!
You have 20 minutes or so to build something in response to the story, either on your own, or team up with others. Ideas:
We are going to have a farming competition to celebrate harvest!
Work alone or team up with others to create the best* farm you can.
Protect your farm from attack
Explore the world and decide which are your favourite parts and why – be prepared to share with others
*”Best” could mean most productive, most varied crops, most imaginative, happiest animals. We’ll discuss at the end!
WonderWhile you are creating, think about these questions with the adults on your table.
I Wonder:
·         which part of this story you like the best?
·         what part is the most important?
·         where you are in this story or what part of the story is about you?
·         if there is any part of this story we can leave out and still have all the story we need?
There are many other things that can make us WONDER – what are you thinking about?
